‘Suero’ The Mexican Electrolyte Drink You Never Knew You Needed
Part of my motivation to create The Hungry Tribe was because I was so intrigued, enthralled, and passionate about every day remedies, treatments, and concoctions from other cultures.
Whenever my friends and family from other countries would share these pieces of wisdom with me I felt so lucky, but I also felt like this wisdom needed to be SHARED. Being in a younger generation (a generation that has lost touch with a lot of innate and cultural wisdom) I felt a huge responsibility to not only search from more of these remedies, but to chronicle my findings. Thus The Hungry Tribe was created. I promise much much more after our move to Central America.
‘Suero’ (also known in some regions as ‘bomb’ or Mexican Gatorade) is one of my new obsessions. It will replenish electrolytes, help with mineral balance, keep you hydrated, cure even the worst hangovers, help you recover from the flu and simply quench your thirst! The direct translation of Suero is ‘serum’ and it’s the drink you never knew you need in life.
When my brother was in town he was on the verge of getting a migraine and wasn’t all too pleased this functional nutritionist had no ibuprofen in the house. A handful of Intenzyme Forte Biotics Research and a large Suero later and he was good to go!!
Suero Recipe:
1 bottle of Topo Chico (or 12 ounces of your favorite carbonated mineral water)
3/4-1 teaspoon of good quality salt (some of my favorites are organic pink salt, Celtic salt, Redmonds Real salt, or Quinton)
Juice of one lime
Instructions:
Pour mineral water into a glass and add salt note this will make it bubble up so stir as you add Start with 3/4 teaspoon of salt and add more to taste. Squeeze the juice of a lime and continue stirring until salt is dissolved. Enjoy!!
